Ok Guys so I know I have another one of my big post's looming in the wake of GTA 4, but this just had to be discussed real quick. The Federal Trade Commission released the results of it's secret shopper tests on how many times they were able to buy a mature rated game without ID. The results speak for themselves with massive improvements over last year.

The overall percent change since the year 2000 is staggering. Then 85 percent of the time a mature rated game was able to be purchased by an underage shopper. Now they are successful only 20 percent of the time. The number is still a little big for me but you have to take into account that the stores that most often sold M games to minors were stores like Target and Toys R Us. Gamestop and EB Games had a 6 percent success rate for a minor to buy a M game! They're a great chunk of the market right there!

The stores and the success rate of minors in attempts to buy mature games:
Game Stop/EB Games - 6%
Wal-Mart - 18%
Best Buy - 20%
Toys R Us - 27%
Target - 29%
Kmart - 31%
Circuit City - 38%
Hollywood Video - 40%

One of the things I noticed when I was buying GTA 4 is that parents are as much to blame as the minors themselves for acquiring games. When I was in the shop there were 2 or 3 mothers on cellphones to their kids, confirming that the game they wanted was GTA 4, and the platform on which they wanted it. It seems to me that most parents don't take games classifications seriously, as I've encountered this on a few occasions for mature-rated games.
