I. INTRODUCTION

So you fought a critter. So you've contracted Ataxia, or Witless Pox, or the
dreaded Ticklebritches (ok, that one can't even be contracted). So your STR is
down by 10, and your AGI is down by 10, but you go on skipping on your merry
way, plowing through whatever dungeon you were in, and the thought of seeing a
healer ASAP doesn't even cross your mind. So you can't hit them QUITE as hard,
but Feather will take care of that encumberance problem, and you just HAVE to
find that coveted Stiehl's Codpiece of Ungodly Virility or CuteUnit's
Breastplate of Impenetrable Chastity. You'll get yourself cured when you get to
a healer...

Not anymore.

This mod makes the diseases... well, not ALWAYS deadly, but much more of an
impendment than they used to be. Firstly, whenever you contract any disease,
you'll experience sight blurring to represent your character's rising fever as
the virus works its way into your system. If you remain uncured for more than
24 hours, the disease will progress, further ravaging your attributes; your
fever will also rise, making it more difficult to see. You'll also find it more
difficult to forge ahead as your character will become more and more exhausted.

Still not convinced to quaff that last Cure Disease potion?

Too bad. 2-5 days after the initial infection, your disease will progress to
its terminal stage, severely crippling you and making your progress all but
impossible. Get yourself cured soon... or end up as roadkill because you'll
become easy pickings for anyone desiring a piece of your succulent flesh.

Different diseases have different effects as they progress. All of them will
take a toll on your Fatigue regeneration and disrupt your vision (but some more
than others). Some will crush your magicka supply; others will ravage your
health (and yes, if you happen to be weak at the moment, they WILL kill you).
Yet others will disrupt your character's coordination, causing him to trip up
and fall flat on his face. Not exactly the greatest thing to happen to you in
the middle of a fight!

II. INSTALLATION

This mod is compatible with:

- Any mod that doesn't alter EXISTING DISEASES.
- Any mod that alters the Vampirism disease (I did not touch Vampirism).
- It is also compatible with any mod that adds new diseases (that would include
Mighty Magick, Birthsigns NoMax, Diverse Races, etc..)

This mod is NOT compatible with:

- Any mod that alters EXISTING DISEASES.

To install the mod:

1. Load your existing save game and make sure that your character isn't
currently suffering from any actual disease. If he is, cure him. IF YOU DO NOT
CURE YOUR CHARACTER BEFORE ACTIVATING THE MOD, YOUR GAME WILL CRASH WHEN YOU
ATTEMPT TO LOAD YOUR SAVE GAME.

+++++THE ABOVE ONLY PERTAINS TO "ACTUAL" DISEASES LIKE COLLYWOBBLES OR YELLOW
TICK, ETC.. "BONUS DISEASES" INTRODUCED BY DIVERSE RACES, MIGHTY MAGICK OR
BIRTHSIGNS NOMAX (AND SIMILAR MODS) WILL NOT CAUSE YOU TO
CRASH.++++++++++++++++++++++

2. If necessary, save your game.

3. Exit Oblivion.

4. Copy Pestilent Afflictions.esp into your Data folder.

5. Activate Pestilent Afflictions.esp.

6. Load Oblivion and your save game and continue playing.

II. MODULE LISTING

1. Pestilent Afflictions.esp

This is the main module that implements the effects described above. I will not
divulge what each of the diseases does so as not to spoil the (unpleasant)
surprize when you get infected.

Questions and Answers:

Q: Are diseases true to the lore?
A: Yes, I tried to make them as authentic as possible, using descriptions from
Morrowind.

Q: Does any disease cause permanent damage to anything?
A: No, once you're cured, you only need to heal any lost health, restore any
lost magicka and fatigue, and you're good to go.

Q: Can I die from a disease?
A: Yes, if an Acute disease progresses to its terminal stage, your health will
start trickling away. It's a slow process, but eventually it will kill you.
Serious diseases also cause health drain when they progress (albeit not as
severe), so that can kill you too if your health is low. However, unless you
have less than 25 hitpoints, no disease will kill you on infection.

Q: How do I know which diseases are acute, serious or mild?
A: Use this reference: http://til.gamingsource.net/zeph/TES_Tre_3.shtml#at8 and
search by the disease name. You'll find most diseases there. Black Heart Blight
and Chanthrax blight are both classified as Acute.

Q: Do diseases produce visual effects, such as sores?
A: No, not yet. Next version(s) may include this functionality though.

Q: Did you include any new infection methods?
A: No, not yet. Next version(s) may include this functionality though.

Q: I have disease resistance and/or very high Endurance score. Do I get any
benefits from that?
A: Yes. A character gets two chances to recover from disease on his own
(without potions or spells). If you have disease resistance and/or high
Endurance, you may be able to fight off the disease before it progresses to its
advanced stage. If it does progress beyond advanced stage, characters with high
Endurance score may still be able to beat it before the disease becomes
terminal - but it'll be difficult. Disease resistance is of no help at this
stage, since the virus has already taken deep root in your system.

Q: I installed the mod, but when I load my save game, Oblivion crashes! What's
up with that?
A: You didn't read the Installation section carefully enough. Read it again and
follow the instructions this time.

Q: Why did you change the mod's name?
A: To avoid being confused with any other existing mod.

Q: Disease X doesn't work the way I think it should. You need to change it.
A: Provide me with sufficient reason to make that change. Otherwise I won't
change it.

Q: I found a bug. What do I do?
A: Either email me with it, or post it in the Release thread. Preferrably post
it in the Release thread.

Q: I asked you a question in the Release thread, and you ignored me! Why?
WHY???!!!!
A: Because your question was already answered in this readme. Read it again.

Q: Your mod sucks! Diseases are overpowered! If Bethesda programmers thought
that diseases should work the way you make them work, they would make them that
way, because they are much smarter than you and had much more time to work on
it! Change everything NOW!!
A: Get bent. This is my mod, and I call the shots.

III. FUTURE PLANS:

These are subject to change, based on absolutely anything.

- Implement visual effects for some diseases (i.e. sores). I am working with a
graphic artist to accomplish that.
- Possibly implement more ways for a character to get infected.
- Fix any bugs, should any bugs be found.

IV. FINAL NOTES:

- Thanks to Miriamel and Zuboko for finding the disease descriptions.
- Thanks to everyone who showed enthusiasm about this project. Without you, it
wouldn't have seen the light of day.
