I've been following an hilarious, yet bizarro, story about a game developer that made an entire game by stealing assets from other games, thing's such as backgrounds, textures, artwork etc. Shacknews has a good write up on the whole saga that you can read about here. I'm not going to go into all the details though. Instead I'm just going to highlight some of the hilarity of the comments made by people on Shacknews and Neogaf. This is where the genius lies. Just take a look at some of these classics and see what I mean:
DaMainman Said:
"I'm oh-so-tempted to pirate this. Pirating a crap game that pirates other, better games is surely a double negative, making it okay to do."
In response to the apparently huge brass balls of the developer, IHATEDUST said:
"My only thought is that Bethseda is so dumbfounded, and intimidated by the HUGE BRASS BALLS, that they just don't bother to file a lawsuit."
Infallible Said:
"Finally someone answered my prayers to combine Diablo 2, Painkiller, UT 2003/2004, Thief: Deadly Shadows, Morrowind, Vampire: The Masquerade, Silent Hill 3 and the film Spawn into a single game."
A Sponge Said:
"You know, I am sure this sort of thing starts off small, maybe a borrowed texture or two as placeholders, but when your publisher doesn't notice you wonder how much you can get away with. When you reach a certain point you become drunk with power and begin adding things from other gamers just for the sheer hell of it. You're daring your publisher to notice but they still don't. "Fuck it Dave, throw in something from Spawn hahahaha!" When you walk out of your publisher's officer after saying "Yes, we went gold this afternoon" you must just collapse on the floor in uncontrollable laughter."
In response to some assets stolen directly from Oblivion, AxeMan808 said:
Hey, let's use the Armorer's in the capital city...I'm sure no one ever went in there..."
SkyBurst101 Said:
"I'm actually less concerned about what Bethesda is going to do to them than Mark Rein's reign of terror and Blizzard are capable of...seriously, between the two of those companies you have the largest MMORPG to exist, and one of the top FPS game developers with Unreal Engine 3 royalties coming in left and right...how many legions of lawyers can they afford? All they need is to find something from Halo, and let your imagination run wild (and explode shortly afterward)."
ctlaltl33t Said:
"You gotta admit: they've got some skill to be able to steal so much from so many different games. That takes dedication"
Directly from the horses mouth:
"Our hope, if everything goes well with the sales, is that within a year we will all be stopping the day jobs and doing this full time."
Frib Said:
"Dude that would take extra effort, next you'll be suggesting they make the assets themselves!"
in response to
"If you're going to take screenshots from another game to use in your shitty myst type thing you're working on, at least you could turn the graphics on very high before you take the screenshots and add them into your game. lol."
chilln Said:
"one last thing and ill be done spamming:
http://memages.jrpereira.com/images_own/limboofthelost_boxart.jpg
thats pretty funny boxart. haha."
chilln Said:
"Is it safe to go ahead and pirate this just for the sake of having a novelty game? plzzzz :D"
GloriousCow responded to that with:
"only if you own Diablo 2, Painkiller, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004, Thief: Deadly Shadows, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, Silent Hill 3 and have Spawn on DVD..."
mwhr1986 Said:
"The whole thing looks like it was put together by three geezers in a pub.
Oh wait, thats because it was
TheMongBat Said:
"In other news, I just wrote a new book called Harry Botter and the Sorcerer's Tone. I did it all myself, incuding the publishing. It's a amazing what you can do with a sharpie and some white-out.
I hope to break the mold on this one."
Genius! Now I'm stealing content from shacknews' readers comments, oh the irony!
It's a good day to be a part of the intarweb!
