8/10
Theatre of War enables you to use real world techniques to great effect. In Theatre of War, tank rushes are out and detailed terrain analysis coupled with a sound recon are in.
AI:
Expect to be surprised by the excellent AI and apportion your reserve units accordingly. Due to the AI, the game can seem almost too easy when you plan well and frustrating and impossible when you don't.
Graphics:
The graphics in Theatre of War are fairly dated but are adequate for gameplay. The terrain textures are very bland perhaps too realistic. More effort should have been put into designing interesting terrain rather than grabbing actual map data. Unit animations and damage effects are quite nice you have time to view them during the sometimes intense battle sequences.
Sound
Sound in Theatre of War is only fair even when using a 5.1 system. That's all to say about that.
Miscellaneous
The most lacking thing in this game is a well thought out campaign system that would allow resource management similar to Medieval Total War. Alternate historical endings like in Panzer General would also be nice, as well as some kind of multiplayer features.
Summary
Overall, this game is only for the serious WW2 war-game buff. RTS speed freaks will be especially thrown off by the more realistic pace which can move from VERY slow to extremely fast in a short amount of time.
