I just read the news from REUTERS that EA has agreed to suspend it's attempt to acquire Take Two while the Federal Trade Commission reviews the legality of the deal(i.e monopoly issues).

I know I explored it already but I still have yet to decide whether or not EA being the primary publisher of sports games counting as a monopoly. I mean it is only one facet of the business. It's an interesting issue when you look at it from the video game industry as while sports games are a big part of the market when was the last time there was a critically acclaimed sports game? I haven't looked into it but I would make a bet that it has been a while.

At GameTrocity we have had a couple of talk sessions about this idea and frankly I still have yet to decide. I do not even own a sports game and the only ones I will play are soccer games, frankly I play anything and more often than not look for the big titles that garner the most attention from the critics. I mean EA is still responsible for some great games, they just tend to be lost under the weight of the crappy movie games they make. I may be willing to allow a domination of the sports games in return for Rockstar keeping it's freedom to publish envelope pushing games such as Grand Theft Auto. I hope I do not catch heat for this but I don't particularly care for a genre of repetition in an industry that encourages new ideas.

I think my verdict at the moment is that I want Take Two to stay independent but if that doesn't work then I would like them to leave Rockstar alone and keep their sports games.
