GTA4 can indeed be crude in places, although, I like the way it seems to juggle between the absurd and the realistic. especially within, what you describe as, a Godfather-like story. It's uncomprimisingly epic, if only in terms of its characters and their use. That's without talking about how these characters are woven into the grand scheme of the story.
